Elves are members of the fairy folk and are very mysterious creatures. Some people believe elves are small fairy folk who resemble human beings while others believe that they look like little old men. Famous elves include Santa's Elves who help Santa make the toys for Christmas.
The earliest record of elves are in Norse Mythology. These elves were known as the Alfar. The elves of Norse Mythology consist of the Light Elves (Liosalfar) and the Dark Elves (Dockalfar).
The Light Elves live in the Norse equivalent of Heaven known as Alfheim. According to a 13th Century Norse, Eddas, the Llight Elves are "fairer to look on than the sun". Unlike many fairy tales nowadays, these elves were tall and beautiful.
Dark Elves are the opposite of the Light Elves and are said to be "darker than pitch". The Dark Elves live beneath the ground. Dark Elves are similar to dwarfs. As much as the Light Elves are good, the Dark Elves are bad.
In British folklore, elves are often described as supernatural beings the same size as humans. They are usually depicted as being male and are capable of helping or harming people who find them.
British elves are also commonly referred to as being beautiful and the phrase elfin beauty supports this.
As in Norse Mythology, elves inhabit the realm of Elphame which in Norse Mythology is known as Alfheim. In British Mythology, Elphame is regarded as an eerie and frightening place.
Danish elves are referred to as Elle Folk. The male Elle Folk are often described as being old and small while the female Elle Folk are described as being young, small and beautiful. The Elle Folk are said to live in the Elenmounds.
